What will be taught?

My new art class at the Purple Chair is all about painting with gouache. It’s a 6-week class (2 hours every Thursday) from 5:30-7:30 pm.   Before you start painting illustrations with gouache, it’s important to understand how to work with the medium. I will begin by showing you how to set up your palette, understand the importance of value, and mix custom colors. I also will teach how to work “thick” or “thin” with dry and wet gouache in order to achieve different effects. We will start with working from everyday objects, like flowers, colored glass, small objects and animal skulls, and move towards more imaginative realism fueled by your ideas.

Once you’ve got the hang of working with gouache, I show you how to approach painting so you can hone the skills that will empower you to illustrate the modern narratives you want to express. Gouache is a water-based, nontoxic, versatile medium perfect for creating vibrant, luminous works of art. It’s a common paint used by commercial artists to create posters, illustrations, comics, and children’s books.
